Design Forward SD | Learn more about the Design Forward Summit 2017
What is Human-Centered Design? Call it a process, a framework, an approach. We at Design Forward see it as a lens, a powerful tool used to see the world with more intricate detail than ever considered possible. And it’s our job to share that lens with others for the greater good. Design Forward is a San Diego-born movement bringing together multi-discipline design, business and civic leaders for a dynamic, interactive Summit committed to strengthening our local and global communities through human-centered design. The event will take place October 26-27 at Liberty Station.

Human-Centered Design is a process, a framework, an approach. We at Design Forward see it as a lens, a powerful tool used to see the world with more intricate detail than ever considered possible. And it’s our job to share that lens with others for the greater good.

Design Forward is a San Diego-born movement bringing together multi-disciplinary design, business and civic leaders for a dynamic, interactive Summit committed to strengthening our local and global communities through human-centered design.

It’s second year, the DF17 Summit seeks to ignite conversation and action around how design can improve the way we live, work and play – and provide designers and decision makers with the tools to affect real and lasting change.

After the successful conclusion of the 2017 Summit, let’s continue to drive the movement and conversion.

Featured Topics

The 2017 Design Forward Summit (October 27, 2017) has a world-class lineup of speakers sharing insights on how and why they’re committed to human-centered design in their organizations.

Why Design Matters
Phil Gilbert, IBM

In today’s world of increasing commoditization and digital capability, people demand and expect easier access, faster. Design is the key to delivering great experiences at scale and with speed. Phil will talk about how IBM is teaming in a new way and making decisions faster with the largest corporate design program in the world, and how the lessons learned over the last four years apply to any organization, of any size.

Don’t Forget About the Humans
Mark Tomaszewicz, Bulldog Drummond

Moments of truth in customer experiences are decidedly human moments. The impact of well-designed customer journey can be undone by the tiniest of interactions with an employee. More than just designing for nice, we can design systems to bring brands authentically to life through people.

How DIY designers are transforming healthcare
Panel Moderator: Steph Habif, Habif Health and Performance

#WeAreNotWaiting is the social media rally of folks in the diabetes community who are taking matters into their own hands; they’re developing platforms and apps and cloud-based solutions, and reverse-engineering existing products to help people with diabetes better utilize devices and health data for improved outcomes. These panelists have emerged as design leaders in the global DIY diabetes community, and are dedicated to further bridging the gap between patient consumers and healthcare companies.

The Art of Reinvention
Kara Defrias, Qualcomm

The world’s a big place, with lots of exciting things to do and try. Yet as a society we pressure folks to pigeonhole themselves into silos: pick a major, choose an industry, buy a house, and settle down. Nowhere is this more true than in the world of tech and design, where there is often no clear path from UX designer or researcher to leader. But what if you want to move around, especially at work? In this talk, Kara shares three key lessons gleaned from over a decade moving seamlessly between the highest levels of tech, entertainment, government, and sports and how you can apply those strategies to your career tomorrow, today.

D4SD Mobility Challenge Part 1
Workshop Facilitator: Hoa Loranger, Nielsen Norman Group

In this two-part workshop in human-centered design, participants will discuss, brainstorm, and prototype solutions for a key challenge related to public transportation in San Diego. In part 1, participants will walk through methods for discovering problems with existing systems and for empathizing with key stakeholders.

D4SD Mobility Challenge Part 2
Workshop Facilitator: Steven Dow, UC San Diego Design Lab

In part 2, participants will take part in ideation exercises and work in small teams to rapidly prototype solutions for a challenge related to public transportation in San Diego. Teams will test their prototypes and reflect on lessons learned through feedback.
