Design Forward 2017 is an experience which will drive design in San Diego and as a broader movement, establish ”America’s Finest City” as a global leader in design thinking and an innovation economy for years to come.
So with all the picturesque locations that San Diego has to offer, from breathtaking beaches to scenic panoramas, why would the Design Forward Alliance choose Liberty Station as the home for DF17? The answer is surprisingly simple: it’s one of the region’s best examples of human centered design (HCD). Let’s examine what that means.
Long before Liberty Station opened as a mixed-community of homes, military housing, shopping, parks, hotels and restaurants, it existed as the Naval Training Center San Diego. For nearly 75 years – 1923 to 1997 – the site belonged to the National Register of Historic Places, supporting the various U.S. Navy requirements asked of it.
Recently, the premises underwent a design evolution. Some of the city’s best HCD minds redefined the area’s purpose, better leveraging its layout and renovating the building structures. The result was a new, reinvigorated Liberty Station that all of San Diego would be proud to visit, work, play and live in.
In order to make this new dream of HCD a reality, Liberty Station took on private investors and developed a plan for the renovation of Building 623. Today, Liberty Station Conference Center serves as an active hub and center for events, activities, seminars, education, training and many other uses for both public and privateclubs, organizations and companies.
We’re proud to call Liberty Station home for Design Forward 2017, as it truly represents an example of HCD that fits the mandate of the Design Forward Alliance and its Summit perfectly. Once you’ve visited, you’ll agree!
